I recently read an article
stating that the overall high
school graduation rate in our
country is on the rise. This
claim is made by the
National Center for
Educational Statistics
(NCES), which is the
generally accepted authority
on this issue.
After reading another piece
on this issue I was surprised
to discover that these
graduation rates are made up
of 80 percent traditional
graduates and 20 percent
GED (General Educational
Development) graduates.
The story went on to indicate
that if GED graduates are

Depending on the source
you reference, the rate of
high school graduates is
somewhere between 68 to 88
percent and the percentages
drop down between 50 to 85
percent for minorities.
Turbulent economic times
will only create more
problems for our unskilled
laborers. A widening in the
wage gap between graduates

exacerbated as unskilled jobs
are typically the first to be
lost in a fledgling economy.
